Mobility budgets and bundles in the Munich region as an alternative to regulation
In the MobiPionier project, the impacts of innovative Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) offers, such as mobility budgets and mobility bundles, are being investigated in living labs for everyday mobility and mobility at major events. A mobility bundle combines certain services at a fixed price, and a mobility budget provides a sum of money for free allocation to a selection of certain means of transportation. All these services are usually accessed via smartphone apps. The aim of MobiPionier is to quantify the impacts for the Munich metropolitan region based on the hypothesis that such offerings lower the perceived cost of using public transportation by improving comfort. By doing so, public transportation will become more attractive within a MaaS ecosystem, which can lead to a modal shift towards sustainable mobility.
MobiPionier is driving forward a technology-open and participatory conception and development of mobility budgets and mobility bundles based on existing smartphone apps. Several hundred participants will test these offers in living labs. The project will also use innovative methods to collect information on mobility behavior with GPS-based and AI-supported travel diaries. This data allows a much more detailed evaluation and assessment of the services tested in the living lab.
The impact of MobiPionier comprises innovative fare products for the German public transportation market and implications as to how these products can be used in terms of mobility policy for a modal shift towards multimodal and sustainable mobility.
