- Is the Metaverse an end in itself? Or do we envision the Metaverse -or Metaverses- and its applications as a means toward an end? We should reflect on how the development of new techniques and tools can be used to serve particular needs and purposes... and through the creation of new means, we might find new ends and new purposes.
- We also have to take into account trade-offs and make choices along different areas in development and design like data use and privacy or openness and security, while at the same time thinking about how to elevate the utility function of these set of technologies.
- This relates to the question on who makes design choices and through which means. What are the affordances and resources that need to be in place in order to make design choices more robust and inclusive?
- The Metaverse will reimagine experiences that can be closely controlled in immersive environments. From a governance perspective, this opens up a new scope of what can be regulated. While in "real life" you can have a private experience, like walking in the park, without anyone knowing, but this might very likely not be the case anymore in immersive experiences.
The Metaverse Multistakeholder Workshop brought together participants from academia, business, industry, the public sector, and civil society, to explore the contours, shapes, and future trajectories of the Metaverse as tomorrow’s digital frontier. The event built on four exemplary use cases in Business to Business (B2B), Business to Customer (B2C), and Government to Customer (GOV2C).
The Metaverse Multistakeholder Workshop is part of the ongoing activities of the Metaverse Research Group, which is currently in its incubation phase at the Technical University of Munich. It is a joint initiative of the Professorship of Public Policy, Governance, and Innovative Technologies with the TUM Think Tank and their international partners, including the Nordic Center for Internet and Society at BI Norwegian Business School and Youth and Media at the University of Zurich .
