[...] Are politicians lagging behind the development of AI with their regulations?
How and when governments should respond to this development is not an easy question. After all, laws should also grant the freedom to develop new technologies. When to intervene in a regulatory manner must be negotiated democratically and takes time. The problem we are now facing is that we have an incredible surge in innovation and we need to understand the societal impact these technologies can have.
Where else do you need restrictions?
Bans and red lines are needed. For example, in assessments of the social behaviour of citizens [...]. Or real-time facial recognition in public spaces. This also applies to applications in the judiciary, such as fully automated court proceedings. Some of these things are already prohibited under current Swiss law.
Different countries will have different rules. Will AI create an even greater rift between nations and their value systems?
This is a real danger. The systems threaten to drift even further apart. Basically, there are three models. The totalitarian Chinese system, the American approach with little regulation and the European way with stricter rules of the game. It is still unclear where countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America are headed. There, many nations have not yet decided which model they want to follow.
